Waves have been a fascination throughout my life.
I’d like to think of this image as more than a happy
accident. I could see this lovely light shining through
as each wave struck a vertical granite face and
wanted to see if I could photograph it.
This picture often needs some explanation: strong
light from the setting sun is shining through this
breaking wave with the water droplets acting like
lenses, their tracer-like trajectories are revealed by the
use of slow shutter speed.
The conditions needed are exacting, right height of
tide, swell direction, with strong, low sunlight and little
wind. This viewpoint is pretty precarious and whilst
trying somewhere else, both my camera and I
received a good saline soaking!
