These are the same trees that Emily Bronte? will have witnessed, probably many times, whenever she came by this farm two centuries ago. The special quality of the sunlight raking across the opposite hillside is typical of these moors and lends the image an optimistic and soothing quality which is often experienced here; a polar opposite to the wintry spirit evoked by Emily for her dark and dramatic portrayal of Wuthering Heights in the novel of the same name, believed by some to have been based on this place.
A version of this image appears in the book The Real Wuthering Heights. The Story of the Withins Farms, by Steven Wood and Peter Brears (2016)
