Britain's greatest navigator was born in the village of Marton which is now a suburb of  Middlesbrough. He grew up in nearby Great Ayton on the slopes below this western outpost of the North York Moors. This austere sandstone monument that stands here in his memory can be seen from the Pennines on a clear day.
