Two-Day Photobook Making Workshop

Tuesday 26th - Wednesday 27th November 2019

10am - 5:00pm (Lunch provided)

Tutor: Eddie Ephraums

Cost: £300

Small group limited to six places

Join us for this hands-on workshop lead by experienced photobook maker Eddie Ephraums and learn how to create two types of easy to make photobooks: 3-hole stitch and concertina-foldout.

No prior experience of book making is required.

Many previous participants have claimed they couldn't cut, fold, stick or sew, (or that they hadn't done any since primary school), yet they all amaze themselves over the course of the workshop by producing beautiful, expertly crafted books.

All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and a selection of images (see the WHAT TO BRING section).

The aim is to develop your picture editing and narrative skills, and to teach you how to make these type of books for yourself at home, using a desktop printer and basic craft tools. A list of tools, materials, suppliers and further reading will be handed out at the end of the workshop.

Over the course of the workshop, we will cover all the key stages of production:

• Developing the concept for your book

• Choosing the images

• Processing the pictures in Lightroom, including a look at workflow and how to correctly set up your computer and printer

• Sequencing the pictures

• Layout and design, including some basic typography

• Printing for book making: choosing the right paper, how to get the best results with your chosen paper

• Finishing: creasing, folding, gathering, gluing and sewing

• Making a wrap around sleeve for the book

There will also be plenty of time for discussion and feedback

• We will start with an introductory session looking at the two types of books we are going to make.

• Next we will get everyone's images into Lightroom and start the editing/sequencing process.

• Then we will print and make a book, to demonstrate the different stages of production.

• After that, we will print the pages for the books, so that everyone gets to make their own books

• The next day we will repeat the process for the second type of book.

A choice of 15 images for your book: highest quality jpegs

As we will be making both landscape and portrait format books, you may want to bring a choice of image formats

Lunch will be provided by the Gallery Cafe (please advise of any dietary requirements)

We will work on a central Apple Macbook Pro, hooked up to a monitor, using Lightroom to edit sequence and prepare the images for printing. We may also use Apple Pages/Microsoft Word and/or Adobe Indesign for some basic text layout.

Printing will be on an Epson 3880

Paper used will be Fotospeed double sided papers
