Stuart Royse

Stuart Royse is fastidious about his photography, for him purity of image is paramount and each picture is carefully crafted to achieve an uncompromising finished print. His portfolio can be divided into three different areas: Landscape, Still Life and Industrial. Occasionally Stuart presents his work as a series of several images, which helps to present a more complete study.

The themes of Stuart’s landscape work are quite simply the natural elements; frost, ice, woodland, sand, water and rock structures. Stuart makes each image as simple as possible to maintain the integrity of the subject. The sand images rarely have any indication of scale and are intentionally abstract. Seen in isolation they appear ambiguous, reminiscent of aerial views of deserts and river deltas or organic growth such as vegetation or muscle fibres.

Stuart’s Still Life work is specific and detailed, paring back any extraneous visual information to concentrate on what is most interesting. He makes both found still lifes, with subject matter photographed in its natural environment, or studio still lifes, using items collected outdoors and brought home.

The Industrial work is part of an ongoing collection, which looks at the hidden world of the industrial work place, both operational and disused. These places are unfamiliar and fascinating, rarely seen by most people. The abandoned places are dark, invariably dangerous, often unsettling, but ultimately alluring.
Stuart comes from a career in advertising photography. He worked out of his own studio for distinguished brands such as BT, Manchester United, GHD and Rolls Royce. Throughout his time in commercial photography Stuart continued to pursue his passion for producing personal work.

Stuart is currently based in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.
