John Wheeler Prints for Arts Sake Collection

People are the main subject and focus of Johns’ paintings. The People that we pass every day in the street. The fleeting glimpses of familiar faces. Their infinite variety. John's drawings, done from life, are executed very quickly without the subject’s knowledge. Perhaps taking less than a minute, a transient snapshot. From these studies, he paints an image recalling that frozen moment, allowing his own memories and thoughts to influence the final outcome. Making them knowable, familiar and alive. The paintings may contain many layers of paint, which are repeatedly rubbed, distressed, worked through and over-painted. Through this process the image slowly develops and reveals itself. Many of the original paintings are on a small scale making them appear more precious, as in a favourite photograph of a loved one. John's philosophy.... “Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?” Douglas Adams as quoted in Richard Dawkins ‘The God Delusion” Nothing to do with art as such but it is my take on the world as I see it without my mind being clouded by ‘fairies’.
