Favourite photographs and paintings from the 2011 Scarborough Art Gallery Exhibition by Joe Cornish and Kane Cunningham
We are delighted to be exhibiting a selection of the most popular of Joe Cornish’s photographs and Kane Cunningham’s paintings from Scarborough Art Gallery’s hugely successful 2011 Landscape Revisited exhibition. The landscape of Yorkshire has always inspired artists and Joe Cornish and Kane Cunningham have continued this tradition working with curator Jan Bee Brown to revisit the fabulous collection of landscape paintings held in store at Scarborough Art Gallery. Joe and Kane were inspired by the work of Paul Marny, H. B. Carter, Atkinson Grimshaw and Ivon Hitchens, to explore the context, tradition and future of landscape painting and photography from the stunning familiar contours of Roseberry Topping to the controversial contemporary slant of Knipe Point.

The exhibition will be on show from Saturday 11th February - Wednesday 7th March 2012. The official launch party, hosted by Kane, will take place on Saturday 11th February, 2 - 4pm. Places are limited, please contact Jo Rose at the gallery for more details.

Press Release

Second chance to see extremely popular ‘Landscape Revisited’ exhibition

Joe Cornish Galleries are delighted to announce that highlights from the hugely successful ‘Landscape Revisited’ exhibition organised by Scarborough Art Gallery in 2011 will once again be on view to the public at Joe Cornish Galleries in Northallerton from February 10 2012.

Visitors to the Joe Cornish Gallery will have another opportunity to see the photographs by Joe Cornish and the paintings by Kane Cunningham that made the ‘Landscape Revisited’ exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery exhibition one of the most popular it has ever organised.

This unique exhibition takes as its thematic starting point the historic landscape paintings in the Scarborough Art Gallery collection. The resulting work pays homage to these historical works while also being grounded in each man’s unique perspective of working in the local landscape.

Joe and Kane worked together and independently for two years to produce the new and exciting works which will be on display at Joe Cornish Galleries in February.

Staff at Scarborough Art Gallery were delighted with the overwhelming enthusiastic public response to the exhibition which was on display there last Autumn: the preview night was the busiest Scarborough Art Gallery has ever hosted, with many people travelling from all over the country to be there. During the exhibition the gallery received some of their best visitor numbers ever, with nearly 4 000 people going to see the exhibition during the two months it was on display.

“The opportunity to show at a major Museum gallery (like Scarborough’s) does not come around often, nor the chance to collaborate with a painter. Kane’s paintings resonate strongly for me with their energetic brushstrokes and marks, glorious colour relationships and atmospheric evocation of place. My photographs, displayed as huge prints in this unique show, provide a counterpoint stylistically, although they too aim to evoke atmosphere and a sense of energy. We are delighted to have this second opportunity to present a slimmer ‘highlights’ show at the Joe Cornish Gallery in Northallerton.”

New Images & New Visions

Inner Visions is a unique event, a privileged insight into the lives and influences of two of the most acclaimed photographers alive on the planet today. It began in 2008 when wildlife ace Andy Rouse and landscape supremo Joe Cornish took the stage at Paramo HQ in Sussex for 4 hours of pure photographic indulgence. Well Andy & Joe are back in 2011 with a completely new show, New Images & New Visions 2011, and they kick off where it all began at Paramo HQ in Sussex on Saturday December 10th at 7pm. It’s gonna be amazing so get your tickets early!

“Jan Richardson – A View of Her World’ Saturday 1 October – Saturday 5 November 2011
The Joe Cornish Gallery is pleased to be hosting a solo exhibition by the painter Jan Richardson. The exhibition opens on Saturday 1 October 2011 with a launch party from 6-8pm.

Jan’s friend, the artist Peter M. Hicks, will be introducing Jan’s work at 6.30pm at the launch party

A talented emerging painter, Jan Richardson has benefited from being mentored over the past year by the respected landscape artist Peter M. Hicks. Work resulting from this association between artists will culminate in the solo exhibition at the Joe Cornish Gallery. A long-time friend of the gallery, Peter Hicks introduced Jan and her new work to Joe Cornish and the gallery staff, who immediately warmed to Jan’s painterly vision, and we are delighted that this has now resulted in an exhibition.

Jan was born in North Lincolnshire in 1964. She graduated in 1986 with a degree in Fine Art and Illustration from Harrow College of Art (now the University of Westminster). After graduating Jan continued to paint in her spare time and exhibited in selective exhibitions, notably at the Ferens Gallery in Hull, where her work regularly sold. After 10 years the desire to devote more time to her painting became too strong and she took the brave decision to become a full-time artist. In 2008 Jan and her family moved to a village in the Yorkshire Dales, where she now works from her garden studio.

Peter says about Jan and her painting, “Jan Richardson is one of those remarkable individuals who has discovered her own unique vision as a painter. In her new work she is enjoying the discovery of a visual poetry and drama in the remote, lonely, harsh and sometimes tender environment where she lives. The wild Pennine region is her home and central source of inspiration and this new work is tapping into its spirit in a way that only those who truly experience its hardships can understand fully and see the source of her creativity. I feel privileged watching Jan’s work evolve, where each new stage remains precious. I see the work of an emerging painter, full of creative energy, challenging and continually discovering herself in each new phase of experience.”

Jan comments on her painting, “Drawing is an intuitive, liberating means of expression and when working out of doors I feel more than alive. Often I feel a huge sense of surprise on completion of a drawing, being unable to recall the physical act of making it. These paintings have evolved from my drawings and are all about places with which I have some sort of involvement, the majority being within a mile or so of my home. My aim in these paintings has been to try to convey my experience of the spirit of a place, through its patterns, its rhythms and the emotion generated at that particular moment in that one place.”

The exhibition runs until Saturday 5 November.

Landscape Revisited at Scarborough Art Gallery

Over the past two years they have worked with curator Jan Bee Brown to revisit the fabulous collection of landscape paintings held in store at Scarborough Art Gallery. Inspired by the work of Paul Marny, H. B. Carter, Atkinson Grimshaw and Ivon Hitchens, Kane and Joe will explore the context, tradition and future of landscape painting and photography in very different ways. Both artists spend hours in the
landscape, in all weathers and in all seasons and so are eyewitnesses to events as they unfold. Responding to the landscape in real time the aim is to capture in a flick of a brush or the press of a button those fleeting moments that are ephemeral and transient. The landscape of Yorkshire has always inspired artists, whether it’s the stunning familiar contours of Roseberry Topping or the controversial contemporary slant of Knipe Point, photographer Joe Cornish and artist Kane Cunningham continue this tradition.

This exhibition will be showing form Saturday 1st October - Sunday 4th December at the Scarborough Art Gallery.
