There are few places as quintessentially Lakeland and also English as the semi-natural woodland of Tarn Hows, one of the jewels of the Lake District. It is even owned by the National Trust, a conservation organisation whose history dates back to the late 19th century and whose efforts have gone a long way to preserving a British sense of identity, both in landscape and in the built environment. In the distance are the Langdale Pikes but the star of the moment is really the patchwork of low cumulus clouds dancing across the sky, creating a pattern of light and shade, sunlight and shadow.
