Dave Tolcher

A recent move resulted in Dave Tolcher’s discovery and growing love for the forgotten Dale of the Nidd. For Dave, the area around Pateley Bridge offers a varied landscape of great beauty and, as it is on the boundary between hill and valley, some wonderfully atmospheric weather conditions. This unique environment has become Dave’s favourite place, where he is continually learning about the relationships between light, land and climate. Dave comments, ‘I have had an interest in landscape and the natural world from a young age. Initially, my photography was channelled towards the pursuit of butterfly and moth images; black and white landscape photographs were a by-product. Fay Godwin and John Sexton provided some early landscape inspiration, but in 2003 attendance at a series of lectures at Robert White by a great trio of British Landscape photographers, David Ward, Joe Cornish and Charlie Waite, changed the direction of my work. I developed§§ a more traditional documentary landscape style, in colour, predominantly on 5 x 4 sheet film. I now use an entirely digital workflow based around either Pentax 645Z or Sony A7Rii systems depending on circumstances. It offers the ability to shoot images into the light that were nearly impossible 10years ago.’
